ownCloud and GÉANT – going from strength to strength

As demand for cloud services continues to grow across the research and education sector, more and more NRENs and campuses are benefiting from the GÉANT Framework Agreement with ownCloud – Europe’s leading on-premises file sync and share software provider.

In 2016, the number of end-user licences purchased under the GÉANT agreement have more than quadrupled to over 489,000 (up from 112,000 in 2015).  This dramatic growth demonstrates the value and importance of cloud storage services to the R&E community.  With usage soon to reach half a million, unit licence costs will fall even further in 2017 – helping to improve the cost effectiveness of the service.

ownCloud continues to develop the product and the open architecture provides a powerful API to support a wide range of applications and plugins across multiple platforms.  This multi-platform support is vital within the research and education world with its wide range of clients and applications. In June, Collabora and ownCloud released Collabora Online –bringing LibreOffice Online functionality to the public and further enhancing collaboration options across teams. ownCloud will make Collabora available as an option under the GÉANT Framework Agreement starting from next year.

On 13 September the GÉANT community will be presenting at the ownCloud contributors conference 9-15 September in Berlin.
