To empower researchers and enable data-driven discovery, the ‘Carpentries’ movement develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental data skills needed for research.
To date, more than 400 people have participated in 13 workshops, with an additional 30 (Data Carpentry and Software Carpentry) workshops at 15 different locations across Ethiopia to be conducted before the end of October 2018.
Mesfin Diro, lecturer in Computational Science at the Addis Ababa University, and the first certified Data Carpentry trainer in Ethiopia, elaborates: “We want to increase the digital literacy of researchers and students and encourage them to work with data openly accessible from for example NASA, the UN, and the World Bank. We want to spread digital literacy as much as possible. That is why we arrange workshops beyond the Carpentry trainings and try to keep researchers using their digital skills in competitions and Hackfests.”
