A broader group will represent the Special Interest Group on Marketing Communications – SIG-Marcomms – as its steering committee says goodbye to two long-standing members, and welcomes five new members. The changes were approved by the GÉANT Community Committee, which oversees the GÉANT Community Programme, on 25 November 2019.

Gitte Kudsk (DeiC) and Maria Ristkok (EENet of HITSA), who were founding members of the community group and have served on the steering committee for many years, stepped down to pursue other work commitments. Replacing them are Laetitia Lagneau (Belnet), Damian Niemir (PSNC) and Naira Kocharyan (ASNET-AM) from among the European NRENs, with Kathryn Anthonisen (CANARIE) and Jane Gifford (AARNet) bringing a wider perspective from other world regions. Lonneke Walk of SURF continues in the steering committee.

Register for upcoming meetings

The new steering committee met for the first time in early November to begin planning for the first two meetings of 2020:

  • 2-3 April – CyNet will host the spring meeting in Nicosia, Cyprus
Registration is open – register for the April meeting.
  • 8 June – the summer meeting will immediately precede TNC20 in Brighton, UK
    PLEASE NOTE
: a 30 Euro fee will be required, to help cover costs of the day’s catering and venue hire. If you plan to attend TNC20 you can already take advantage of the early bird TNC20 registration and register for SIG-Marcomms at the same time: register for TNC20 & SIG-Marcomms.
For anyone wishing to attend only SIG-Marcomms and not TNC20, you can separately purchase a side meeting pass from mid-January 2020.

SIG-Marcomms is one of the longest-running GÉANT community groups; a 2018 CONNECT article about SIG-Marcomms highlighted the role of Lonneke, Gitte and Maria in ‘Steering Marcomms through 15 years of success’.

In memoriam

Among the founders of SIG-Marcomms, as pictured in the news article mentioned above (image left), was Lajos Balint of the Hungarian NREN now known as KIFÜ. Lajos had been active with SIG-Marcomms since its beginning, making many contributions to discussions and bringing a useful high-level perspective to many topics. Members of SIG-Marcomms were very sad to learn that Lajos had passed away recently; he will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues in the group.
