On Monday 7 April 2025, CESNET will kindly host the second meeting of the Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (SIG-AI) within the context of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). This will take place in Prague, the day before the GÉANT Security Days.
In the morning, a brainstorming session will take place, which is open to all interested participants. The afternoon will have a thematic focus on Security and AI.
The SIG-AI meeting will be followed by a Security and AI session at the GÉANT Security Days, chaired by members of the SIG-AI Steering Committee.

What is SIG-AI?
SIG-AI explores the potential applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the context of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). The group will delve into how AI can enhance cybersecurity, above-the-net services, network management, and network services currently offered by GÉANT and the NRENs. This SIG will also look at new EC regulations concerning AI and how they affect GÉANT and the NRENs.
The SIG’s initial efforts should focus on building a strong foundation.
Knowledge sharing
- Organise workshops and presentations to introduce NREN professionals to the basics of AI and its potential applications in networking.
- Compile a comprehensive knowledge base that explores relevant research papers, case studies, and best practices in utilising AI within NREN environments.
- Serve as a cumulative starting point and knowledge hub before the specific sub-themes are taken up by the different work packages of the respective GÉANT project.
Use case development
- Identify specific use cases within the NREN project areas (cybersecurity, above-the-net services, network management, and network services) where AI can be demonstrably beneficial.
- Develop concepts for pilot projects with clear objectives and measurable outcomes to validate the chosen applications.
