GÉANT, RedCLARA, and ASREN to present at COP26 on the role of Research and Education Networks

At this week’s COP26 representatives from GÉANT, RedCLARA, and ASREN will run a dedicated session at the EUROCLIMA+ pavilion to talk about the role of Research and Education Networks in the service of Climate Action.

Following a welcome by Horst Pilger, Head of Sector DG INTPA (the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships), GÉANT CEO Erik Huizer, RedCLARA CEO Luis Eliécer Cadenas, and ASREN CEO Yousef Torman will introduce RENs from Europe, Latin America, and Africa respectively, and will be joined by guest researchers from each region explaining the vital nature of RENs to Climate Action.

  • Dr Marguerite Nyhan is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering & Future Sustainability at University College Cork (an HEAnet client) and a Funded Investigator in MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Climate, Energy and Marine.
  • Lincoln Alves is a researcher from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), a research unit of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • Professor Islam Abou El-Magd is Deputy Director of the National Authority for Remote Sensing & Space Sciences, Egypt.

Joining the panel are Mark Urban, CFO of RedCLARA, and Chris Atherton, Senior Research Engagement Officer, GÉANT.

Research and Education Networks are vital to scientific research across numerous disciplines and importantly are unconstrained by geographic borders. This allows the fast, secure, and seamless exchange of data and information that underpins research and its application.

The session, to be held on Saturday 6 November and which will be live-streamed and free to access, aims to convey this to the global COP26 audience.
