GÉANT blocks institutions listed in the EU 6th package of sanctions

GÉANT General Assembly hears from Ukrainian NREN, considers position on Belarussian NREN

In light of Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine and following the EU’s 6th package of sanctions, GÉANT is now obliged to block those institutions listed in the package of sanctions that are currently accessing the GÉANT network via the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy (KIAE).

This includes the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP).

Earlier this year GÉANT had already ceased KIAE access to LHCONE, one of the largest research infrastructures involving Russia, thereby excluding scientists at KIAE from participating in LHCONE but still allowing communication between scientists in Russia with scientists in the rest of the world.

This new action effectively ceases all communication from these Russian institutes via the GÉANT infrastructure.

We continue to support Ukrainian Research and Education and our partner, URAN. And we further condemn Russia’s war, which is a violation of international law, of modern democracy, and a crime against the free Ukrainian nation.

The GÉANT Association, its Board of Directors, and the consortium of European NRENs stand united with the Ukrainian NREN, URAN, and the people of Ukraine.
