TNC23 Workshops: What, When, Who and Where

Did you know that the TNC23 conference programme features two full days dedicated to workshops? All workshops are organised by the international GÉANT community on various thematic areas: from network orchestration and e-health to NREN communications and will also include a Security and a Mobility Day. The workshops will take place on Monday 5 June and Friday 9 June in different locations and their duration will vary. Here’s an overview of TNC23 workshop programme and a brief summary of the themes that they will cover.

Monday 5 June

SECURITY DAY 2023
Security Day will bring together security experts from Research & Education to share experiences and discuss trends and developments. It will focus on cyber threat intelligence, the evolving threat landscape, international collaboration and joint solutions.

GÉANT CLOUD FRAMEWORK
This workshop will focus on the Cloud Framework activity, looking ahead to the next public procurement tender. Additionally, this workshop will be held in coordination with the SIG-CISS Meeting taking place later on the same day. Both workshops will focus on hybrid applications integrating Cloud Procurement and Community Cloud activities, highlighting the active engagement between the two communities and the mutual benefit brought about by the collaboration.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
This session will focus on how over the last four years the growing GEANT’s Trust and Identity (T&I) portfolio has been providing solid foundations for identity services that have addressed some prestigious international use-cases.

FROM ZERO TO ORCHESTRATED—A WORKFLOW ORCHESTRATOR BEGINNERS’ WORKSHOP
An interactive full-day technical workshop that will give participants the opportunity to benefit from ESnet and SURF network and software engineers who will share their knowledge of Network Orchestration.

STRATEGY MEETS REALITY: NRENS’ EDUCATIONAL SERVICES STRATEGIC PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION
The workshop will focus on strategic opportunities and challenges, participants will be invited to share knowledge and best practice on practical issues related to the delivery of education, both nationally and globally.

GÉANT COMMUNITY SIG-CISS MEETING ON CLOUDY INTEROPERABLE SOFTWARE STACKS
The Cloudy Interoperable Software Stack Special Interest Group is the GÉANT Community body in charge of gathering the community of NRENs Cloud experts and Cloud infrastructure operators around best practices, technological challenges and options to collaborate. Additionally, this workshop will be held in coordination with the GÉANT Cloud Framework meeting taking place earlier on the same day. Both workshops will focus on hybrid applications integrating Cloud Procurement and Community Cloud activities, highlighting the active engagement between the two communities and the mutual benefit brought about by the collaboration.

Friday 9 June

MOBILITY DAY
Mobility Day is an annual event, covering topics including eduroam, govroam, mobile networks, 4G, 5G, WiFi 6(e), Internet of Things, Low Power WAN, Passpoint/Hotspot 2.0 and other mobility related topics.

REFEDS
The mission of REFEDS (the Research and Education FEDerations group) is to be the voice that articulates the mutual needs of research and education identity federations worldwide. The group represents the requirements of research and education in the ever-growing space of access and identity management, working with and influencing the direction of other organisations on behalf of our participants.

SIG-MARCOMMS MEETING
The GÉANT Special Interest Group on Marketing Communications (SIG-Marcomms) will explore challenges and opportunities in the marketing communications work which supports the core business of research and education networks around the world. Participants will share their experiences and best practices and explore which TNC23 sessions and keynotes look promising for future marcomms work and collaborations.

SCIENCE MESH – GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION
The Science Mesh, from the CS3MESH4EOSC project, is a federation of distributed but interconnected data storage and sharing services, known as Enterprise File Sync and Share (EFSS) services. In this session, attendees will understand the functionality and technical innovation of the Science Mesh, learn how to join the mesh and become aware how the already-integrated data services have been used to address challenges by real communities.

AUTOMATION WITH CISCO NETWORK SERVICES ORCHESTRATOR
There are now a handful of organisations (ESnet and Internet2 to name a few) in the global research and education community leveraging Cisco Network Services Orchestrator as part of their network automation and orchestration platforms. This half-day workshop will provide an introduction to NSO and hands-on experience with creating NSO service models and running NSO against simulated devices.

R&E NETWORK UPDATES
Participants will discuss potential collaboration opportunities in intercontinental connectivity between R&E networks and automation/orchestration.

JOINT EGI-GÉANT WORKSHOP ON SUPPORTING eHEALTH
The goal of this workshop is to update and inform the community on the ongoing activities on eHealth and the European Health Data Space initiative and to identify the possible joint, synergic actions that could ease the onboarding of users to the European Health Data Space.

JOINING NRENs’ FORCES AND SPENDING POWER TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
What impact do R&E Networks have on the environment? Can our joint efforts towards a greener and more sustainable R&E ecosystem generate positive change and help reduce the environmental impact of the whole community? Could we even persuade (larger) commercial vendors to really make a difference by using our collective spending power? This interactive workshop follows on from the initiative launched in 2022 to establish a ‘Procurement in the GÉANT Community’ platform. Additionally it will present an occasion for RENs to share best practices, findings and initiatives in different areas related to sustainability.
