EARN (European Academic and Research Network) is among the organisations at the origin of GÉANT. In 1994, EARN merged with RARE (Réseaux Associés pour la Recherche Européenne) to form TERENA, the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association. Then again, in 2014 the merger of TERENA and DANTE led to the establishment of the GÉANT Association.
