AARNet, Australia’s national research and education network, collaborates with institutions like the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) to support First Nations research and cultural preservation.
AARNet upgraded AIATSIS’ network infrastructure, including a 2023 fibre build connecting the AIATSIS Central Australia facility, enabling the local preservation and repatriation of Indigenous cultural materials. AARNet also contributes to the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA), a collaborative project focused on preserving and revitalising scattered First Nations language data. This initiative aims to secure vulnerable collections and improve access to digital analysis tools, ensuring long-term preservation of Indigenous languages and cultural heritage.
