GARR launches new eduVPN service for secure connections worldwide

The new eduVPN service is now officially available for Italian students, teachers and researchers to browse protected, wherever they are.

Designed for those who study, teach or work in the academic or research field, eduVPN allows you to browse in complete safety even outside of university buildings or research institutions, protecting your data from potential risks, especially on public networks.

What is eduVPN and how does it work?

eduVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) that creates an encrypted tunnel between student devices and a remote server operated by GARR. This is particularly useful when using unsecured Wi-Fi networks (such as those in airports, hotels, or public places), By using a VPN, this service prevents data transmitted from being intercepted by third parties.

With eduVPN you can choose to connect not only to the GARR network, but also to other international research networks (including, for example, the French, German or Dutch ones). There are about twenty research networks around the world that already adhere to the service.

Among the main advantages , in using eduVPN is that it allows access to international resources, such as research tools and training content, which are sometimes accessible only from certain geographical locations. With eduVPN, researchers and students can, access the same resources even when traveling or on Erasmus, so being able to work continuously even off campus and during periods of international mobility. In this way, it is possible to improve the effectiveness and quality of research and promote international collaborations thanks also to a secure data transfer.

eduVPN is coordinated at European level by GÉANT , the European research network, which supports and promotes the service to ensure high standards of security and privacy for the entire European academic community.

With the launch of eduVPN, GARR confirms its commitment to providing cutting-edge tools to support education and research in Italy, while ensuring security and data protection for the entire user community.
