We’re delighted to share this important news from our partners at WACREN:

The first-ever interconnection between Lagos and Cape Town is now a reality.

Since the inception of the AfricaConnect project in 2011, the vision of interconnecting Africa’s research and education networks without links routed through Europe has been a long-standing dream and goal.

The successful Lagos–Cape Town interconnection is a truly historic milestone. It unlocks new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing across Africa. This achievement strengthens the continent’s digital backbone, empowers African researchers, educators, and students, and ensures that Africa can take an even more active role in the global research and education community.

At GÉANT, we are proud to be part of this journey through AfricaConnect3 alongside our partners at WACREN, UbuntuNet Alliance, ASREN, and the European Union.
