The GÉANT Trust and Identity (T&I) Incubator, part of the GÉANT (GN5-2) Project, has just entered its 11th cycle. The new cycle kicked off in Stockholm on 14-15 October, hosted by the Swedish NREN SUNET, bringing together T&I experts and innovators from across the research and education (R&E) community.
The T&I Incubator’s purpose is to develop, foster, and mature new ideas and technologies in the field of T&I for research and education. This may include testing and experimenting with new features for existing GÉANT services, developing business cases for potential new services, enhancing privacy, data protection, and interoperability in services or software.
Cycle 11 – the next wave of T&I innovation
Cycle 11 introduces eight new activities focused on two transformative themes shaping the future of federated identity:
- OpenID Federation – solving real-world challenges in trust establishment and discovery
- Digital Wallets – bringing verifiable credentials to life for research and education
All activities will now follow a series of development sprints, concluding with demos aimed at showcasing progress.

A special thanks to SUNET for hosting the Cycle 11 launch event in Stockholm and to all participants contributing to this new cycle.
Cycle 10 – highlights and outcomes
The new cycle follows from the successful conclusion of Cycle 10 – the first in the lifetime of the GN5-2 project – which carried out four activities between March and September 2025. In particular, Cycle 10 activities tackled the topic of bona fide researcher verification, the implementation of OID4VCI (OpenID for Verifiable Credential Issuance) into SimpleSAMLphp and Shibboleth IdP, and two Proofs of Concept around OIDFed.

Trust and Identity Incubator Mentorship (TIM) programme
Alongside these developments, the incubator supports emerging talent through the Trust and Identity Incubator Mentorship (TIM) programme, connecting students with T&I specialists and providing practical opportunities to contribute to innovation in this evolving domain. Proposals from TIM Programme participants were selected to be part of the Incubator both in Cycle 10 and Cycle 11.
