Webinar and practical workshop: Designing incident reporting systems in cybersecurity
19 February 2026, 14:00 – 16:30 CET
Online
The human ability to recognise and report incidents remains central to effective cybersecurity. Yet, despite advanced technical controls, many organisations still struggle to encourage meaningful incident reporting from employees. How can we make reporting easier, safer, and a natural part of everyday practice?
On Thursday, 19 February 2026, GÉANT invites the NREN and broader R&E community to an interactive webinar and practical workshop exploring how cybersecurity can learn from decades of safety science in aviation, healthcare, and other high-risk sectors.
Learning from safety science
The session opens with an expert keynote by Nico Ebert, drawing on insights from his recent paper:
Learning from Safety Science: Designing Incident Reporting Systems in Cybersecurity
In his talk, Nico will explore how principles such as psychological safety, fair and non-punitive responses to mistakes, simple reporting mechanisms, clear guidance, and strong feedback loops have transformed reporting cultures in safety-critical environments—and how these same principles can significantly strengthen cybersecurity resilience.
About the speaker

Nico Ebert is Professor of Information Systems and Head of the Cybersecurity & People Group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. His work focuses on human factors in security and privacy. Nico holds a PhD in Information Systems from the University of St. Gallen and brings several years of practical experience from consulting companies and large corporations. His research interests include organisational and behavioural aspects of security and privacy, security and privacy by design, and human–computer interaction.
From insight to practice
Following the keynote, participants will take part in a hands-on workshop, working collaboratively to translate these proven ideas into the design of practical, user-centred incident reporting systems. The focus will be on making reporting easy, supported, and embedded into everyday organisational practice. This interactive format provides an opportunity to exchange experiences with peers and develop concrete ideas that can be applied directly within your own organisation.
Who should attend
This workshop is aimed at cybersecurity professionals across the NREN and R&E community, including awareness and training experts, security managers, SOC and incident response leads, risk and compliance officers, anyone involved in designing or improving reporting channels and response processes.
