AzScienceNet develops “Surgical Platform” to advance medical education and digital collaboration

As part of its ongoing commitment to digital transformation in science and education, the AzScienceNet Network Operations Center continues to develop innovative technological solutions that strengthen collaboration between academic and medical institutions. One such initiative is the newly launched “Surgical Platform,” which marks an important step toward modernising medical education and expanding the use of advanced digital and network technologies in clinical training and research.

The platform was launched in Azerbaijan within the framework of scientific and innovative cooperation between the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU). It was developed with technological support from the AzScienceNet Network Operations Center, Azerbaijan’s NREN.

A pre-release of the platform took place in 2024 at Azerbaijan Medical University in a hybrid format, bringing together representatives of the academic, medical, and research communities.

The project aims to enhance medical education by providing students, residents, and medical professionals with comprehensive knowledge of organ diseases, diagnostic approaches, differential diagnosis, conservative treatment methods, and surgical procedures. Another key objective is to expand joint multidisciplinary research with the Department of Surgical Diseases of AMU on the application of information and communication technologies and artificial intelligence in medicine, addressing current challenges, future tasks, and practical solutions.

As an innovative distance-learning solution, the platform delivers content in both question-and-answer and slide-based formats, supporting informed examination and treatment decisions. Users can access materials based on the practical experience of teaching staff, including lectures and educational texts.

Featuring a multilingual interface, the “Surgical Platform” is accessible to users not only in Azerbaijan but also to students, doctors, and patients in other countries, promoting international learning and knowledge exchange.

Plans are in place to expand the platform’s use across additional departments of Azerbaijan Medical University and to introduce it abroad, further strengthening international cooperation in medical education. Users of the portal can obtain information based on the practical experience of the teaching staff, as well as lecture materials and texts.

Designed with a multilingual interface, the “Surgical Platform” is accessible not only to users in Azerbaijan, but also to students, doctors and patients in different countries, supporting international learning and knowledge exchange.

In the future, there are plans to expand the platform’s use across additional departments of Azerbaijan Medical University and to introduce it in several foreign countries, further strengthening international cooperation in medical education. The platform has already been launched in Kazakhstan and it is planned to be introduced in Georgia and Turkey in the next stage.
