From intention to impact: Strengthening assertive communication in GN5-2 projects

Training

Clear, respectful communication is more than a soft skill in complex projects, it’s a delivery enabler. Recently, members of the GN5-2 Project community took part in the Mastering Assertive Communication workshop, a focused, practical session designed to help participants navigate challenging conversations with clarity, confidence, and empathy.

The impact was immediate and tangible. Participants reported gaining skills they can directly apply in their day-to-day work, particularly in situations where messages need to be clear without becoming confrontational. Many highlighted how the workshop helped them better balance directness with respect, especially when communicating needs, setting boundaries, or addressing sensitive topics within project teams. One participant summed it up simply:

“I was struggling to express what I need in a less directive way. This gave me concrete phrases and a structure I can actually use.”

A recurring theme in the feedback was intentionality. Several participants noted that they are now pausing to think more deliberately about the intention behind their messages before communicating, whether in meetings or in writing. Others shared that they have already started applying the learning to written communication, planning messages more carefully and using assertive techniques to reduce misunderstandings and friction across teams.

The practical nature of the session stood out strongly. Realistic examples and hands-on scenarios helped translate theory into action, making it easier for participants to connect the concepts to their own project realities. As one comment captured:

“Well-prepared, interactive, and clearly explained. It really helped turn knowledge into an actionable skill.”

Overall, the workshop reinforced an important capability for GN5-2 projects: communication that is clear, respectful, and purposeful. When team members feel better equipped to express their perspectives and needs, collaboration becomes smoother, decisions clearer, and project work more effective, exactly where assertive communication delivers its greatest value.
