New learning unit in the Network eAcademy: “Managing Complexity with a Catalogue Driven Approach”

The GÉANT project’s Network Development team is pleased to introduce a new learning unit in the Network Automation track of the Network eAcademy: “Managing Complexity with a Catalogue Driven Approach.”

As network services grow more complex, providers need clear ways to structure their products and services so they remain consistent, easy to manage, and ready for automation. Catalogue driven management helps organisations organise services in a structured way, reduce confusion when offerings become more complicated, and support smoother collaboration across teams and domains.

The course is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on product bundling and catalogue composition. It revisits the basics of catalogue driven management and then explains how complexity increases when several products or services are combined into a bundle. Learners explore how to keep specifications clear, how to understand relationships between elements, and how to manage bundled offerings in a structured and practical way.

The second part introduces federated catalogue management across multiple domains. It shows how organisations can work together when services and catalogue information are shared between different teams or environments. This section highlights common challenges such as keeping information consistent, ensuring changes are visible and traceable, and maintaining alignment when multiple parties contribute to the same service ecosystem.

The final part looks at towards self updating catalogues. It explains why static catalogue setups can become difficult to maintain over time and presents approaches for keeping catalogues up to date in a controlled way. Learners are introduced to structured update processes, reusable templates, and governance practices that help ensure changes remain consistent, transparent, and manageable.
