Where were you in 1996?

In Cambridge, the small office of DANTE (who, together with TERENA, were the predecessors of the GÉANT Association) welcomed a young Matthew Scott as Commercial Manager. Little did he know that 30 years later he’d be so warmly celebrated at the same organisation by staff new and old who have had the pleasure to know and work with him in that time.

Since joining, Matthew has taken on a series of challenging senior roles, including Chief Financial Officer, General Manager, Chief Programmes Officer, and more recently as Senior Project Advisor. Throughout his extensive and illustrious GÉANT career, he has helped steer the organisation – and, via his central leadership role in the many phases of the GÉANT project, the wider GÉANT community – through change, growth and continued success, making a lasting impact along the way.

Matthew is truly somebody whose warm, friendly, calm and yet utterly professional approach embodies the collaborative environment that underpins GÉANT.

Tryfon Chiotis, Chief Operations Officer: “Thank you, Matthew, for your continued dedication, leadership and contribution over the past three decades. It’s a fantastic achievement and one we’re delighted to celebrate.”

Matthew adds, “My first days all those years ago are still quite memorable: I was employee number 12 and joined a very quiet and very hot non-air-conditioned office next door to [current office location] City House, in the middle of Euro 96. Having worked for large corporates before this, the new environment was – to put it mildly – quite different. But I clearly loved it, as have so many others whose long service highlights what a great organisation this is to work for, and a great community to be part of.

Fast forward 30 years and the role of GÉANT as a global leader in its field with deep and impactful infrastructure, services, collaborations and relationships across the globe has never been greater. Working with such a talented, motivated, friendly and supportive group of colleagues has truly been a huge privilege, so Thank You all too!”
