Collaborative scientific research between Europe and China is set to be further boosted by an additional 10G of inter-regional connectivity which has just entered service.
Jointly tendered and contracted by GÉANT and CSTNET, the Chinese science network, the new circuit directly links CSTNET’s national backbone and GÉANT’s pan-European research and education network over a low latency terrestrial fibre optic cable.
The capacity boost comes in response to the increasing data transfer requirements of collaborative research between Europe and China on projects such as the ITER energy fusion reactor, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments, the meteorological TIGGE ensemble forecasts, EUMETSAT, the EBI-BGI genomics collaboration and the worldwide e-VLBI radio-astronomy network, to name but a few.
The new circuit complements the existing 10G London-Beijing link jointly contracted by GÉANT and the Chinese NREN CERNET since 2015, following the successful completion of the ORIENTplus project which had established the first direct connection between Europe and China with CERNET and CSTNET.
