#GEANTwomeninSTEM: Jule Ziegler

In honour of Women & Girls in Science Day and International Women’s Day, two important days marked by the United Nations and celebrated across the globe, we are celebrating the women in our community. As our wonder women are involved in many fields, we decided to focus on specific fields and this year we are highlighting the women in Trust & Identity! Like everything in the world of GÉANT, our trust and identity team is a strong collaboration between women (and men!) all over the globe.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to our colleagues working for T&I, which shows perfectly in this series.

Let us introduce you to Jule Ziegler, researcher raised in the ‘computer world’.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jule Ziegler and I am a researcher at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Munich, Germany.

What is your study and professional background?

I have earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in computer science, afterwards I started my professional career at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre and with that my engagement in the GÉANT project.

How did you end up in STEM?

I literally grew up with STEM. Having spent a lot of my time with my older brother during my childhood was probably most influential. He introduced me into the ‘computer world’ and we started competing in video games. Later, at high school I graduated in mathematics using a computer algebra system and I knew STEM was going to be the right choice for me.

Are there any challenge(s) you face as a woman in STEM (personal, in the sector, in T&I)?

I haven’t experienced any challenges during my studies and work because of gender so far. Rather being one of the youngest is challenging sometimes.

What is it you do in the field of T&I?

In the GÉANT project I am involved in the research activities of Trust & Identity. My daily work includes the investigation of new service ideas and potential service components as we do for example in this phase in the T&I Incubator. I also do some project management and liaison with other groups and communities.

Name your greatest experience or achievement in T&I work

I am proud to contribute to get the identity & authentication assurance work successfully through REFEDS public consultation and support promoting it internationally.  It was one of the first topics I started working on in T&I and it took us quite some iterations and fruitful discussions to get where we are now. I really enjoy the collaborative and open way in T&I and hope there will be many such challenges to solve as a team.

Any inspiring words for our readers?

Be creative, curious and passionate to achieve your goals.
