Today, 11 February 2020, hundreds of not-for-profit and industry organisations across the globe join forces to work “Together for a better internet”.

Over the years, Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004, SID is now celebrated in approximately 150 countries worldwide.

Organised on the second day of the second week of the second month, each year on Safer Internet Day, millions of people unite to inspire positive changes online, to raise awareness of online safety issues, and participate in events and activities right across the globe.

Nowadays digital technologies provide children and young people with a world of possibilities at their fingertips, with so many opportunities to discover, exchange and create, but the digital world is not all rainbows and unicorns! Growing up online means dealing with new kinds of risks. SID aims to create both a safer and a better internet, where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

SID is organised jointly by Insafe and INHOPE: the two organisations, with the support of the European Commission*, work together through a network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) and hotlines across Europe fighting Child Sex Abuse Material (CSAM).

Today we are all invited to join ‘Together for a better internet’ and across the GÉANT community we all agree that everyone has a responsibility to make a positive difference online.
