The Southern Macrozone of Chile, essential for scientific research with national and global significance, particularly in climate crisis solutions, was previously disconnected from Global Research and Education Networks. To address this, the Chilean National Research and Development Agency (ANID) and REUNA initiated the Patagonia Project. With an investment of approximately $900,000, the project aims to connect this region to global research networks by establishing Points of Presence (PoPs) in Coyhaique and Punta Arenas. This expansion adds 1,310 km of network and benefits various educational and research institutions.
The project also supports the upcoming International Antarctic Center in Punta Arenas, enhancing the city’s role as a primary gateway to Antarctica. This initiative not only promotes scientific research but also bolsters Punta Arenas as a strategic hub for international scientific collaboration and Antarctic expeditions, aligning with broader efforts by Chile and the European Union to enhance connectivity and global science engagement.
