TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, the National Academic Network and Information Center of Turkey celebrated the inauguration of their new data centre and the powerful ARF supercomputer in Ankara on June 25, 2024.
During the inauguration, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM Director, Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu emphasised the impressive energy efficiency of the new data centre. Notably, this facility incorporates cutting-edge and innovative technologies, including direct liquid cooling and rear door cooling which contribute to sustainability and performance.
The ARF supercomputer, named after the mathematician Cahit Arf, ranks 313th globally in terms of processing power. With 504 servers and 56,000 CPU cores, it boasts a theoretical performance of 3.4 Pflops/s. This incredible machine enables concurrent simulations for critical fields such as environmental science, earth science, manufacturing, bioinformatics and disease diagnostics.
TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM manages TRUBA, the Turkish Science e-Infrastructure, and operates the national research and education network ULAKNET which has been connected to the GÉANT network since the early 2000s. TRUBA currently serves over 6,000 researchers in Turkey, its extensive infrastructure includes 80,000 CPU cores, 200+ GPUs, and 14 PB of high-performance storage. Additionally, TÜBİTAK is involved in numerous European projects and collaborations including GÉANT, EGI, EOSC, and EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. The Turkish NREN also coordinates the operation of the National Competence Center for High Performance Computing (NCC Türkiye) to enhance awareness and competencies in high-performance computing, high-performance data analytics and artificial intelligence.
The inauguration event was hosted by the president of TÜBİTAK and graced by the participation of the Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology and senior management representatives from multinational high tech organisations.
