The Special Interest Group on Management of Service Portfolios (SIG-MSP) had their Autumn meeting on 24 October hosted by PSNCin Poznan, Poland. The focus was service sharing strategies and challenges, NREN service portfolio developments and updates, current AI work in NRENs, and ideas for improved collaboration in the future.

With a great turnout of 26 attendees on-site and close to 40 joining online, Raimundas Tuminauskas from PSNC welcomed everyone warmly. He continued with an update on PSNC’s service portfolio and an overview of their latest network infrastructure.

Afterwards, Alberto Pérez Gómez (RedIRIS) gave an overview of new RedIRIS services and Jana Ernekerova (CESNET) presented the evolution of CESNET services, from network infrastructure to Open Science Cloud, as well as challenges faced during times of organisational transformation.

After a short coffee break, all NRENs present participated in an interactive AI roundtable discussion in the form of Lightning Talks. With one slide and only two minutes to present, they each gave a quick rundown on where AI is on their roadmap, their AI portfolio (if any), and their developments and goals in this field.

Participants enjoyed the refreshing and lively format of this session, therefore this may continue to be included in future meetings. The AI roundtable was also a great starting point to baseline current NREN AI activities for the newly formed SIG-AI, which will have its first meeting in Poznan in December with PSNC as their host. More information and registration details can be found here.

The meeting continued with an OCRE 2024 tender update from Michel Wets (SURF), and some shared experiences on participating in EC procurements by Maciej Brzeźniak (PSNC), more specifically about the EOSC EU node tender. This was of particular interest to the community as we see a landscape of procurements becoming more noticeable in 2024.

Jeroen Wijenbergh and Zoë Fischer (GÉANT) followed with a presentation on GÉANT’s new Vulnerability Management Service (VMS), which adds to a strong security portfolio currently offered to NRENs. The main aim of the service and its advantages were described, as well as some use cases of NRENs who have already adopted the service.

After lunch, the group had the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the impressive and extensive PSNC premises – a real highlight of the meeting. Later on, the meeting continued with a Belnet services update from Jean Pierre Aerts (Belnet) and a presentation from Jennifer Ross (GÉANT) on the Compendium and how it can be extended for global use.

The meeting finished on a high note with Kostas Koumantaros (GRNET) opening up a discussion on how service sharing across the community could be improved and how to best collaborate on new service developments. It was followed by Jan Meijer (SIKT) and Jakob Tendel (DFN) reviewing the current Above-the-Net roadmap and discussing possible future directions for collective above-net efforts based on current challenges. This led to insightful discussions and plenty of debate and interaction between the NRENs on this hot topic.

As usual, it was great to see participants come together to share developments in their service portfolios, to discuss service sharing strategies and lessons learned in order to improve cross-network collaboration. A big thank you to all those who joined both in-person and online, and a special thanks to our colleagues at PSNC who made all of this possible.
