The Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan has celebrated its 55th anniversary with a special event reflecting on the institution’s role in shaping the country’s information and communication technology (ICT) landscape, as well as its contribution to scientific research and digital transformation.

Speaking at the event, the institute’s Director General, Academician Rasim Alguliyev, highlighted the organisation’s evolution from the Automated Control Systems Department, established in 1971 within the ANAS Institute of Cybernetics. Over the decades, the institution developed into the Information-Telecommunication Scientific Centre and, in 2002, was formally established as the Institute of Information Technology.

The institute has played a pioneering role in Azerbaijan’s digital development. According to Alguliyev, its early research focused on supporting the introduction of mathematical methods, computing technologies and automated information systems across government bodies, socio-economic sectors and industry. These efforts helped lay the foundations for digital government and the development of the country’s ICT infrastructure.

Among the institute’s notable achievements are facilitating Azerbaijan’s first internet connection in 1991 and developing the country’s first website, science.gov.az, in 1995. The institute has also led the establishment and development of AzScienceNet, Azerbaijan’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), as well as AzScienceCERT, the country’s first Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). In addition, it has developed key components of the digital infrastructure underpinning AzScienceNet, including a data centre, supercomputing facilities and cloud services.

Today, as part of the international research and education networking community, AzScienceNet supports regional and global scientific collaboration by enabling access to international research infrastructures. Through participation in initiatives such as NATO’s Digital Silk Road and GÉANT’s EaPConnect and GN projects, AzScienceNet has evolved into a provider of advanced networking and digital services for Azerbaijan’s research and education community. It connects universities, research institutes and academic organisations through high-speed connectivity, cloud platforms, cybersecurity services and digital collaboration tools.

With more than five decades of activity, the Institute of Information Technology continues to play a central role in advancing Azerbaijan’s research and innovation ecosystem and strengthening the scientific foundations of the information society. The institute conducts research in a range of strategic and emerging technology fields, including artificial intelligence, data analytics, software engineering, natural language processing, cyber-physical systems, digital government, digital health, cybersecurity and deep learning.
