Partner Webinar: GARR and Cubbit Introducing Edustorage: a next-gen federated storage proposal in Education & Research, for the global NREN network

Are you working at a NREN, education, or research institution?

Research data is growing and needs to be stored with full control, stay resilient and always available — even if one or more sites go down.

Open-source software is the common route for many. It offers control, but at the cost of rigidity, complexity, and IT resources pulled from research. Public cloud isn’t an option either, given the data’s strategic value and compliance needs.

In April 2026, GARR (Italy’s NREN) combined its high-speed network with Cubbit’s distributed S3 object storage to deliver Edustorage: the first federated, geo-distributed storage network in Europe for the research and education community — independent from any third-party infrastructure.

Institutions join the on-prem network by contributing their own hardware, taking an active role and gaining full control, resilience, selective data sharing with external groups, regional compliance, and high performance. Data is encrypted, fragmented, and replicated across multiple locations: never exposed in full and always accessible even if one or more sites fail.

To find out more, join GARR and Cubbit on 22 September 2026, from 1 to 2 pm (CET), for a webinar hosted by GÉANT. You’ll learn:

  • Beyond security and compliance: the real challenges facing the Education & Research community
  • The most common solutions adopted today, and their trade-offs
  • The GARR case study: benefits, technical details, and why it’s a model other countries should replicate
