GÉANT bids farewell to EC Project Officer Enrique Gomez

GÉANT says goodbye to Enrique Gomez, the European Commission’s Project Officer for the GÉANT Project after more than five years of fruitful collaboration.

Enrique will be moving from the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructure e-Infrastructures & Science Cloud to a new unit within the EC in the Policies area with a focus on Cyber Security.

The farewell event took place in a surprise video call on eduMEET, the web-based videoconferencing platform created by the GÉANT Project. It was attended by colleagues and project participants from across Europe who gathered virtually to give heartfelt thanks to Enrique for his dedication and commitment as allowed by current circumstances and pandemic restrictions.

By coincidence this event takes place on a memorable day for GÉANT as it celebrates a significant project milestone – the first router-to-router pings on the GN4-3N network between Lisbon and Porto.

Matthew Scott, Chief Programme Officer for GÉANT commented: “Enrique’s guidance, encouragement and support have been invaluable to the GÉANT Project. Our productive relationship enabled us to deal with the unique complexity of the Project through its various iterations and saw us through many successful EC reviews. We are delighted for Enrique’s career progression and wish him all the best for the future.”

Enrique Gomez added: “I feel lucky and privileged to have been involved in the GÉANT Project, I enjoyed working with a team whose competence and expertise are uniquely matched by professionalism and authentic human touch. I will miss you all, but I leave with the satisfaction of a job well done. I see GÉANT’s international dimension entering a new great phase and look forward to seeing the organisation grow and evolve. On a personal note I am sure that our paths will cross again and look forward to seeing most of you in real life in Brussels.”

Enrique’s project officer role will temporarily be taken over by his colleague Magdalena Szwochertowska.
