Iceland: the world’s volcanic laboratory

Iceland, the land of ice and fire, owns its existence to a large volcanic hot spot sitting on a mid-oceanic ridge – a unique setting. The island is a true paradise for volcanologists, where they try out novel data-intensive monitoring and early-warning technologies to help save lives and livelihoods, not only on that stony island in the North Atlantic, but in other parts of the world threatened by volcanic eruptions.

Via satellites, scientists at the Nordic Volcanological Center, University of Iceland keep a close watch on any signs of eruption. A prerequisite for this is the rapid transfer of satellite images from space agencies to local computing facilities over a reliable R&E networking infrastructure.
