The EU has announced new legislation under the title of EU Security Union. There are a number of reasons for this legislation, and an important one is recognising infrastructures on which the operation of day-to-day society depends. The EU is still working on the final text of a number of directives, as far as we can judge now GÉANT and NRENs will be appointed critical infrastructures, while universities and research institutes will be appointed “important infrastructure”. This means that the NIS-2 directive will apply to both.
The NIS-2 directives imposes a large number of obligations to the organisations that are within scope. While some of these will be easy to meet for a part of the NRENs, some are new and will take a fair amount of preparation. It is expected that the directives will be finalized by the second half of 2022. At that point the Member States will need to implement them, and our community will have approximately 2 to 3 years to prepare accordingly.
In this infoshare we will give an introduction to the NIS-2 directive and a number of related directives, go in detail into their impact and explain the state of affairs.
We will also invite representatives of NRENs to share with us how they are preparing for this legislation. If you have already been looking into preparations for these directives and are willing to share please let us know in advance by sending an e-mail to alf.moens@geant.org.
We will end this infoshare with a discussion on how we can jointly prepare for these directives.
