Breaking boundaries: Women in STEM take center stage at e-AGE24

“Don’t be a burning candle, be a shining light,” This powerful message set the tone for a session aimed at not just highlighting challenges but also celebrating solutions and forging new pathways for women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

As Part of its commitment to empower women and foster inclusivity, ASREN hosted the inaugural Women in STEM track at its annual conference, e-AGE24. Co-funded by the EUMEDplus project, the track highlighted the successes and challenges faced by women navigating demanding careers in STEM fields. The event witnessed a thought-provoking conversation with distinguished panelists from Algeria, Lebanon, Oman, and Tunisia, who shared personal stories, lessons learned, and practical recommendations for amplifying women’s voices in the region’s STEM landscape.

The session’s themes struck a chord globally. Social media responses highlighted the track’s impact on challenging perceptions. Federica Tanlongo, Chief of Communications at the European Plate Observing System, wrote, “There are so many inspiring Arab women in STEM, and it’s just great that ASREN is giving them credit! Not only are they powerful role models for a whole new generation of scientists and engineers, but they also challenge the simplistic view some westerners still hold about the Arab world and women’s role in it. We need more of this!”

Empowering Women in STEM: A Shared Commitment

When asked on “How can organizations like ASREN and NRENs foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for women”, panelists shared thoughtful advice:

  • Build Community: “A woman needs a community to feel more confident; organizations should help form a type of community for women.”
  • Promote Representation: “We must ensure diverse and inclusive sessions—not just all-male panels.”
  • Mentorship Programs: Mentoring was highlighted as a tool for long-term professional guidance and empowerment.

These insights align with ASREN’s newly launched mentoring program, connecting women in STEM to exchange expertise, benefit from professional resources and career tips, and help them find mentorship opportunities.

Join the Wave; Be Part of the Change

As e-AGE24 concluded, one message stood out: empowerment requires action. Propagating inclusive events to wider audiences, integrating mentoring programs, and creating communities where women can thrive are crucial steps in ensuring long-term support for women in STEM.

The road ahead calls for more voices, greater visibility, and stronger support for women in the region and beyond.

Join ASREN in shaping a future where women continue breaking boundaries, leading innovation, and inspiring change.
